Hydroblasting achieves what abrasive blasting achieves, without the abrasive. No grit to buy, contain, sweep up and dispose of — which in a cargo hold, a tank or a working deck is not a minor advantage but the entire reason the job is possible while the vessel is in service.

We operate high pressure and ultra-high pressure units for coating removal, scale and marine growth removal, degreasing and surface preparation, achieving the WJ-standard cleanliness your coating specification calls for.

What you get

  • High pressure and ultra-high pressure units up to 40,000 psi
  • No abrasive residue to contain, collect or dispose of
  • Prepares to WJ-2 / WJ-3 surface cleanliness standards
  • Removes chlorides and soluble salts that abrasive blasting leaves behind
  • Suitable for tanks, holds, decks and offshore structures

Scope of work

What is included as standard. Anything outside this is quoted separately and flagged before mobilisation, never added afterwards.

  1. 01

    Coating removal

Removal of failed, degraded or unwanted coating systems from steel structure, down to the specified cleanliness standard.

  2. 02

    Scale and corrosion removal

Removal of rust scale, mill scale and corrosion products from tanks, holds, decks and structural steel.

  3. 03

    Salt and contaminant removal

Removal of chlorides and soluble salts that cause premature coating failure — the key advantage over dry abrasive methods.

  4. 04

    Degreasing

Removal of oil, grease and hydrocarbon contamination from decks, machinery spaces and working areas.

  5. 05

    Surface preparation

Preparation to the WJ standard specified by the coating manufacturer, with cleanliness verified before coating.

How we deliver it

  1. 01

    Specification review

The coating specification and required surface standard are confirmed with the paint manufacturer or the vessel.

  2. 02

    Containment and safety

Work area is controlled with exclusion zones, and operators work with full UHP PPE under a written safe system of work.

  3. 03

    Blasting

Surfaces are prepared to the specified standard with water and residue managed and collected.

  4. 04

    Inspection

Prepared surface is inspected and, where required, salt-tested before coating begins.

Frequently asked

Does hydroblasting produce a surface profile like grit blasting?

It does not create a new profile — it exposes and cleans the existing one. For previously blasted steel that is usually exactly what the specification needs. For new steel with no profile, abrasive blasting is the correct choice and we will say so.

How is flash rusting handled?

By controlling the interval between preparation and coating, and by using an approved flash rust inhibitor where the specification permits it.
