Shore tanks come out of service for a reason — a statutory internal inspection, a product change, a repair, or a decommissioning. Whichever it is, the tank has to go from full of product to safe, clean and open for entry, and every day of that transition is a day of lost storage revenue.
We work to a written, client-approved procedure covering product removal, sludge recovery, washing, gas-freeing and waste disposal, so the tank is handed to the inspector or contractor in a condition that lets them start immediately rather than waiting on rework.

Scope of work
What is included as standard. Anything outside this is quoted separately and flagged before mobilisation, never added afterwards.

Product and residue removal
Remaining product is stripped and transferred, and pumpable sludge is recovered to nominated tankage or road tankers.

Sludge treatment and oil recovery
Where volumes justify it, sludge is treated to recover saleable hydrocarbon and reduce the mass sent to disposal.

Washing and degreasing
Shell, floor, roof structure and internal fittings are washed and degreased to the standard required by the next activity.
- 04
Gas-freeing and monitoring
Forced ventilation to safe-for-entry or gas-free-for-hot-work condition, with continuous atmospheric monitoring throughout occupancy.

Inspection preparation
Floor plates, annular rings, weld seams and roof supports are cleaned to a condition that allows meaningful thickness measurement and visual inspection.

Procedure and permits
A site-specific method statement, risk assessment and permit package is agreed with the terminal's HSE function before mobilisation.

Isolation and de-inventory
The tank is isolated, blinded and de-inventoried under the terminal's lock-out procedures.

Cleaning and gas-freeing
Sludge recovery, washing and ventilation proceed to plan under continuous monitoring and confined-space control.
- 04
Handover for inspection
The tank is presented clean, dry and certified for entry, with waste manifests and a completion report issued.
Frequently asked
Do you work to the terminal's permit system or your own?
Always the terminal's. Our procedures are written to integrate with the site's permit-to-work, isolation and emergency response arrangements, not to run alongside them.
Can cleaning be done without man entry?
For some tanks, non-man-entry techniques using automated equipment and recirculation are viable and reduce risk considerably. Whether that applies depends on tank geometry, sludge character and what the next activity requires, and we will assess it at survey.
